STILL SEARCHING FOR SUGARMAN…

Tuesday, October 1st, 2013
Freq. Magazine Earlier this year I made a trip to Cape Town, South Africa to attend Afrikaburn, the Burning Man of Africa. I had first been introduced to it four or five years ago by my friend Tal and have been going annually ever since. Tal’s father Stephen had been involved in the recent Oscar-winning documentary, ‘Searching for Sugarman’, about Detroit musician Rodriguez, who had become huge in South Africa while remaining virtually unknown to the rest of the world. So, on arrival in Cape Town, I made sure that I made a trip to his record store, Mabu, to see if I could find any of his music on vinyl. When it comes to vinyl, I only really buy 45s these days. There’s something about those little records that I just really love, along with the challenge of actually tracking down hard-to-find songs on 7” rather than on an album. This usually involves hours of digging in the most obscure places but, when you score something you’ve been looking for ages, or discover something you didn’t know about, it’s pretty satisfying…

ALI B AT AFRIKA BURN 2011

AIRFIX020

This is the second film I have made about my adventures at Afrika Burn, the official African outpost of Burning Man, the art and music event based on radical self expression and self reliance. 2011 was an awesome year with lots of amazing art and music and I got to hang out with some truly great, great people. I pretty much had a 40 hour week of DJing, playing for around 5/6 hours a night which for anyone that knows me, will appreciate is my idea of heaven. Big thanks again to the VuVu Lounge whose mobile sound system once again owned Tankwa Town alongside The Succulents and The Led Headz. This film was shot on my trusty iPhone and edited on my laptop and features aerial footage of Afrika Burn which was filmed from a short ride in a very small plane, giving a great sense of scale. I can’t wait for Afrika Burn 2012 which takes place from 25th – 30th April. You can check out their official website here. See you on the Playa…

He’s a short video taken from my set at The Rockpit, Shambhala 2011. It’s the 5th time I’ve played at this festival and in my opinion its one of the best ones out there. The track playing is ‘Whine Ya Waistline (Surecut Kids Remix) – Danny T & Oh Snap!!’
